Strawberry Shortcake & Potato/Onion Bread

We constructed this immense dish of strawberry shortcakes just so it would photograph well, and then someone forgot to remove the ladder. For safety, our strawberry shortcake kits aren't ten feet tall, but they are hearty, handmade, and delicious.

Market-Made Strawberry Shortcake

(a.k.a. a great Mother’s Day dessert)

A fun activity for Mother's Day would be to let the kids construct a strawberry shortcake dessert for Mom from one of our Strawberry Shortcake Kits, especially if those kids are in their 30s or 40s — those older young'uns just love stuff like that.

Each kit has four of our handmade shortcakes (slightly sweet, nice and crumbly, beautifully browned), along with macerated strawberries ("macerated" sounds so fierce) and fresh whipped cream (so vanilla-y) — we slice all the strawberries and we whipp all the cream.

Our May Artisan Bread: Roasted Potato and Spring Onion

Potato plus onion plus Marczyk's breadmaking prowess makes this Roasted Potato Bread with Spring Green Onions what Pete Marczyk nicknames as "truly the Vichyssoise of Bread."

This bread is still formed from whole wheat flour, yeast, salt and water, but we also add roasted potatoes, which contribute more flavor and texture than a loaf made merely with wheat flour.

As for the onions: We don't caramelize them too much — that would make more of a fall loaf of bread — so we slightly sweat scallions and chives in some extra virgin olive oil and use those. This captures the "green" of spring but is also a fitting addition to the roasted potato.

Caution: If you place your nose next to this bread and inhale deeply, especially when the bread is warm, it may cause a desire to eat half of the loaf, and since it tastes even better than it smells you may have a desire to eat the rest of the loaf. So order two.
